History

Community Baptist Church began in 1954 as a chapel of Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN.  Mrs. Carra Hicks, who lived in the Sawyer community on Signal Mountain, had prayed for some 20 years that God would send someone to start a church that would have the doors open for worship every Sunday.  Prior to that time, there had been a circuit-riding preacher, but the folks in the community never knew when he would pass through.  Mrs. Hicks lived in a house with no electricity or running water.  She listened on an old farm radio to Dr. Lee Roberson, and she decided to write to him and ask if he could send up one of the “preacher boys” from his school in Chattanooga to hold services.  Two students responded to that opportunity—Brother Ed Cook and Brother Glenn Morgan.  After graduating from Tennessee Temple, Brother Ed and his wife Edna moved to another area, but Glenn and Dot Morgan stayed on and Brother Glenn served as pastor for 50 years.

Since then, the following men have served as pastor:

Roger Copas merged his congregation from Walden’s Ridge Baptist Church with us and served as pastor from 2004 until his death in 2009.

Jeff Cox (2010 – 2011)

Dave Marcum (interim 2012 – 2014)

Mark Miller (2014 – 2020)

With confidence in God’s faithfulness, we await God’s direction concerning a new pastor for our congregation.  We are trusting Him to continue His work in us and through us so that others can be touched with His love and be drawn to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
